Virginia Occupational Safety & Health (VOSH) recently issued serious and willful citations and penalties totaling $304,130 to a company for exposing their workers to respirable crystalline silica hazards while using jackhammers to remove concrete. The company did not provide adequate eye and face protection, did not provide adequate respiratory protection, failed to assess each worker for exposure to respirable crystalline silica, and permitted workers to use jackhammers without proper dust control methods.  Virginia Occupational Safety & Health (VOSH) did their initial inspection in February 2018 and the silica related hazards were addressed with the company.  A follow-up inspection was done 3 months later, in May 2018, and the same silica related hazards were not corrected and therefore the company was issued willful citations.
